A five-night trip to Bhutan from Bangkok breaks into four costs: the return flight from THB 31,869 all-inclusive economy on Bhutan Airlines, the Sustainable Development Fee at USD 100 per adult per night, the visa at USD 40 once, and your land arrangements. The fixed part comes to about THB 49,400 per adult. Everything above that is a choice.
Most Bhutan cost guides are written in US dollars for American readers, and every one of them estimates the airfare. This one is in baht, from Bangkok, using the fare we actually sell as Bhutan Airlines' General Sales Agent in Thailand. Figures are current at August 2026, quoted as starting prices, and confirmed in writing for your dates before you pay.
Where dollars have to become baht below, we use an illustrative THB 32.5 to the US dollar, checked 29 August 2026. That is for arithmetic, not a rate we offer — you pay the SDF and visa in dollars and your card will apply its own rate on the day.
The four things you are actually paying for
Bhutan pricing feels opaque until you separate it into buckets, and then it becomes ordinary arithmetic.
Two are fixed government charges with no room to negotiate: the SDF and the visa. One is the flight, which we can quote exactly rather than estimate. The last is land arrangements — hotel, licensed guide, driver and vehicle, meals, entry fees — and that is the only bucket where your decisions move the number. It is also, at the top end, by far the largest.
The mistake almost every first-time budget makes is treating the SDF as the expensive part. It is not. It is fixed and modest next to a week of lodge nights.
The flight: real Bangkok–Paro fares
Bhutan Airlines flies the Airbus A320 from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Paro International (PBH), with some routings via Kolkata (CCU):

Two things about that fare are worth knowing, because they change how it compares with a cheap regional ticket. Every fare includes 25 kg of checked baggage and a hot meal, in economy as well as business — there is no unbundled carry-on-only fare on this route, so the headline number is the number. And the routing matters: a service via Kolkata takes longer but is the same ticket, while the Kolkata sector is what makes a diversion recoverable when Paro weather closes in.

The SDF and the visa: the fixed government fees
- SDF: USD 100 per adult, per night. Five nights is USD 500, about THB 16,250. Children aged 6 to 12 pay half; children who have not turned 6 pay nothing. The concession holds for trips starting on or before 31 August 2027.
- Visa: USD 40 per person, once, non-refundable.
That is USD 540 per adult for a five-night trip, roughly THB 17,550. Note the SDF is charged per night, not per day: a "five-day trip" is usually four nights, which is USD 100 less than people budget for.

What do land costs actually cover?
Because Bhutan requires every visitor to travel with a licensed guide, land arrangements are quoted as a per-person, per-night rate rather than as separate hotel and tour lines. A standard quote covers your hotel on twin-share, a licensed English-speaking guide, a driver and private vehicle, most meals, and monument entry fees.
Since the 2022 reform removed the old price floor, this bucket varies enormously. Indicative ranges from the quotes we see, per person per night on twin-share:

Two structural points matter more than the tier you pick. Party size changes the per-head cost sharply, because one guide and one vehicle are shared however many of you there are — four people split a cost that two people would each carry half of. And a single traveller pays the most per head, both for the vehicle and for a room, which is why solo Bhutan trips look expensive next to solo trips almost anywhere else.
Three realistic five-night budgets

The spread is the point. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive version of the same itinerary is almost entirely accommodation, and it is a factor of two and a half. Anyone telling you Bhutan costs a fixed amount has not priced the part that varies.
For most first trips from Bangkok, the comfortable column is the honest planning figure: call it THB 75,000 to 80,000 per person for five nights, all in, before shopping.
What does a day in Bhutan cost?
Dividing a five-night trip by five gives a daily figure of roughly THB 13,100 in the simple column, THB 15,600 comfortable, and THB 32,600 at a luxury lodge. That includes the flight amortised across the stay, which is why the daily number falls the longer you go.
Strip the flight out and the on-the-ground daily cost is clearer: about THB 6,700 a day simple, THB 9,200 comfortable. That is the figure to compare against a day in Japan or a day in Europe, and on that basis Bhutan is unremarkable. The flight is what makes a short Bhutan trip expensive, not Bhutan.
How does the total change with party size?
Sharply, and in the direction people do not expect. The guide, the driver and the vehicle are per party, not per person, so every additional traveller dilutes a fixed cost.

A solo traveller carries a single-room supplement and the whole vehicle, so expect to pay roughly 15% more per head than a couple. If you are travelling alone and the number is the obstacle, ask us whether there is a group departure near your dates — joining one is the single largest saving available to a solo traveller.
Children are quoted separately: the SDF is halved from 6 to 12 and nil below 6, and child air fares are quoted with your booking rather than published.
Can you save money by booking the Kolkata connection yourself?
This comes up often, and the answer is no, for a reason that is not about price.
Some routings operate via Kolkata, and it is technically possible to buy a Bangkok–Kolkata ticket on a cheap carrier and a separate Kolkata–Paro ticket, and shave something off the total. What you lose is protection. On a single ticket, a missed connection is the airline's problem to solve and you are reaccommodated. On two separate tickets, a delay on the first leg means you have simply missed a flight you paid for, and you buy a new one.
That matters more on this route than on most, because Paro operates on visual approach and the schedule moves with the weather. Add an Indian transit visa requirement and a night in Kolkata you did not plan, and a saving of a few thousand baht turns into a considerably larger loss. When do you actually pay?
The sequence surprises people who expect to pay everything at once.
Seats are held first, without payment, while we return a written quote. Nothing is charged online at that stage. The visa application and the SDF are then filed together and must be settled before travel, since visa clearance is checked at Bangkok check-in. Tickets are issued against the confirmed fare, and land arrangements follow the operator's own schedule, typically a deposit at confirmation and the balance before arrival.
The practical implication for your budget is that the USD 540 of government fees and the ticket are committed well before departure, while some land cost may still be payable later. Ask for the payment dates in writing at quote stage and there are no surprises.
What do people forget to budget for?
These are the items that turn a tidy budget into an awkward conversation on day four.
- Tips. Customary rather than compulsory, and genuinely expected: commonly USD 10 to 15 a day for your guide and USD 5 to 10 for your driver. Over five nights that is USD 75 to 125 per party, not per person.
- Travel insurance. Buy it, and buy it with medical evacuation cover — Bhutan's road distances are long and helicopter retrieval is the only fast option from some valleys. We do not sell insurance.

- Pony hire on the Taktsang climb, if you want it, paid locally on the day.

- Drinks, laundry and souvenirs, none of which sit inside a land package. Textiles are the thing worth budgeting properly for; they are not cheap and they are not fake.
Is Bhutan expensive compared with other trips from Bangkok?
Honestly, yes, per day — and not by as much as its reputation suggests once you compare like with like.
A five-night Bhutan trip in the comfortable column lands near what five nights in Japan costs a Thai traveller in high season once flights, hotels and intercity rail are counted, and below a comparable stretch in western Europe. The difference is that in Bhutan the guide, driver, vehicle and most meals are already inside the number, and in Japan they are not.
Where Bhutan is genuinely expensive is at the short end. Two nights carries the same flight cost as seven, so the per-day figure for a very short trip looks terrible. Four to six nights is where the arithmetic settles, which is why the five-day, four-night Paro, Thimphu and Punakha route is the shape most people end up flying.
How do you bring the total down?
Four levers, in order of how much they actually move.
Choose accommodation deliberately. This is the big one, worth up to THB 100,000 on a five-night trip. A licensed farmhouse night is not a compromise; for many travellers it is the best night of the trip. What a Paro farmhouse stay and hot stone bath is really like describes one.
Travel with others. Four sharing a guide and vehicle beats two. Ten or more unlocks the group return fare as well.
Count nights, not days. Dropping one night saves USD 100 of SDF plus a night of land cost — often THB 8,000 or more for a change most itineraries absorb without loss.

What does not work is hunting for a cheap fare on this route. There is one airline flying it from Bangkok and the fare is what it is.
Five budgeting mistakes we see
Counting days instead of nights. The SDF and your hotel are both charged per night. A five-day itinerary is four nights, so a five-day budget built on five nights of fees is USD 100 and one hotel night too high — and the reverse mistake, budgeting four nights for a genuine five-night stay, is the one that hurts.
Assuming the SDF is the expensive part. At the comfortable standard it is about a fifth of the trip. Accommodation is the number to interrogate.
Converting the government fees at an optimistic rate. You pay them in dollars. Budget at a rate slightly worse than today's and you will never be short.
Forgetting the trip does not end at Paro. Airport transfers at the Bangkok end, a possible buffer night, and travel insurance are real costs that sit outside every quote you will be given.
Pricing a solo trip from a couple's figure. The vehicle and the room do not halve. Add roughly 15% per head.
