Bangkok to Paro Flights: Schedule and When to Book

At a glance
  • Bhutan Airlines is the carrier from Bangkok to Paro, on the Airbus A320, some routings via Kolkata.
  • Return fares start from THB 31,869 all-inclusive economy, including 25 kg of baggage and a hot meal.
  • Book six to nine months ahead for October, November and Paro Tshechu. Those dates sell out, they do not merely get expensive.
  • Three to four months is enough for most other dates; the monsoon can be booked much later.
  • Buy the through fare on one ticket. Self-connecting in Kolkata on separate tickets removes every protection you would need.

Book six to nine months ahead for October, November and Paro Tshechu, and three to four months for most other dates. Bhutan Airlines flies Bangkok–Paro on the Airbus A320, with return fares from THB 31,869 all-inclusive economy. In high season the constraint is seats, not price: those weeks sell out rather than getting expensive.

That is the opposite of how most international routes behave, and it is the single most useful thing to understand about booking this one. There is one airline, a small aircraft, and a mountain airport that limits how many flights a day are possible. Chasing a fare sale is not a strategy here. Getting the dates you want is.

What is the Bangkok–Paro schedule?

Bhutan Airlines operates the route from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Paro International (PBH), with some services routing via Kolkata (CCU):

Outbound flight

Bangkok to Paro

B3 701
Departs · local timeBKKBangkok
≈ 4h 30m · via CCUAirbus A320
Arrives · local timePBHParo
Return flight

Paro to Bangkok

Two features of the timetable are worth planning around, and both come from the airport rather than the airline.

Flights are morning operations. Paro sits in a valley ringed by ridges and is flown on a visual approach, so it is a daylight airport and cloud tends to build through the day. An early departure is not an inconvenience; it is why the flight is reliable.

Frequency is low. This is not a route with several daily options to fall back on. If you miss the flight, the alternative is usually a different day, which is why connections and buffer nights matter more here than on a trunk route.

How far ahead should you book?

The honest answer varies by season more than by price.

When you want to travelBook by
October and November6–9 months ahead
Paro Tshechu (Mar–Apr)6–9 months ahead
Thimphu Tshechu (Sep–Oct)6–9 months ahead
March to May, general4–6 months ahead
December to February3–4 months ahead
June to August1–3 months is usually fine

October is the month people underestimate. It has the best weather of the year, and by the time most travellers begin planning an October trip the seats have gone. Late booking in October costs you the trip; late booking in July costs you very little. The month-by-month guide to visiting Bhutan sets out what each season actually offers.

If your dates are fixed by a festival, book the flight before anything else. Festival dates move with the lunar calendar, so confirm the year's dates first — then hold seats.

What is included in the fare?

More than a regional fare comparison suggests, which matters when you are weighing the number against a low-cost ticket somewhere else.

Every Bhutan Airlines fare from Bangkok includes 25 kg of checked baggage and a hot meal, in economy as well as business. There is no carry-on-only fare on this route to compare against, so the published figure is the figure you pay. Details of what that looks like on board are in Bhutan Airlines baggage and meals.

Our current published fares from Bangkok start from THB 17,853 one-way and THB 31,869 return, all-inclusive economy, with taxes and surcharges included at the time of publishing. Return is normally better value than two one-ways. Groups of ten or more qualify for a group return fare from THB 29,500 per person — conditions on our offers page.

How long does the flight take?

Direct services run a little over three and a half hours; routings via Kolkata add the ground time at CCU and a shorter final sector, so allow most of a morning either way.

Bhutan is one hour behind Thailand — UTC+6 against UTC+7 — which is worth noting when you read an arrival time on a ticket. A morning departure from Bangkok lands you in Paro with the day still ahead of you, which is the reason the schedule is built the way it is.

Which side of the aircraft should you sit on?

On a clear day, the left-hand side flying Bangkok to Paro gives you the better view of the high Himalaya, and the right-hand side on the return. On the northern approach in good visibility, passengers on that side sometimes pick out Everest and Kanchenjunga on the horizon before the aircraft turns into the valley.

Two honest caveats. The view depends entirely on weather, and it is best in the clear months from October to February. And the descent into Paro itself is spectacular from either side, because the aircraft is manoeuvring between ridges close enough to see farmhouses on them.

Ask us to note a seat preference when we hold your booking. It is not guaranteed, but it costs nothing to request.

Economy or business?

Both include 25 kg of checked baggage and a hot meal, which is the unusual part of this route: the economy fare is not a stripped fare.

Business buys space and priority rather than a different arrival time on a sector of this length, and the practical case for it is strongest if you are connecting from a long-haul flight into Bangkok the same day. For most travellers on a return trip from Bangkok, economy is the sensible choice and the saving goes further inside Bhutan, where accommodation is the largest variable in the whole budget.

Should you book the Kolkata connection separately?

No, and the reason is protection rather than price.

Some services route via Kolkata. It is technically possible to buy Bangkok–Kolkata on a low-cost carrier and Kolkata–Paro separately, and save something. What you give up is the thing you are most likely to need on this route. On one ticket, a delay that causes you to miss the onward sector is the airline's to resolve and you are reaccommodated. On two tickets, you have simply missed a flight you paid for.

Given that Paro's schedule genuinely moves with the weather, and that clearing Indian immigration means you need appropriate Indian entry permission, the downside is a night in Kolkata and a new ticket. Ask us which case applies to your specific flights: whether you need an Indian visa depends on the routing, not on your nationality alone. The Bhutan visa guide covers that question in full.

Do you need the visa before you book?

No, and the sequence matters.

Seats come first. We hold them without payment while we return a written quote; the visa application and the Sustainable Development Fee are then filed together against your confirmed itinerary, and visa clearance takes about five working days. Tickets are issued against the confirmed fare.

That ordering exists because the visa is issued against an itinerary. It also means the binding deadline on a high-season trip is the seat, not the paperwork — the visa will be ready long before October sells out again.

What can go wrong, and how do you protect against it?

One thing, mostly: weather at Paro.

The approach is visual, so cloud does not just delay flights, it stops them, and the fix is scheduling rather than insurance. Leave a buffer night at the Bangkok end before any onward long-haul departure. One hotel night is a small price against a missed intercontinental ticket, and it converts the most common disruption on this route into an inconvenience. What actually happens when Paro weather delays your flight explains the mechanics, including diversions to Kolkata.

The second risk is quieter: booking hotels and land arrangements before seats are held. In high season the flight is the scarce item. Hold the seat, then build the trip around it.

Can you change or cancel a booking?

Fare rules vary by fare type, so the useful answer is that we tell you the change and cancellation terms in writing at quote stage, before anything is paid, rather than after.

Two things are worth knowing regardless of fare. The USD 40 visa application fee is not refundable if you cancel, and neither is a Sustainable Development Fee already remitted to the government, though a reduction in nights before travel is recalculated. And a change of date in high season is limited by availability rather than by the fare rule: moving an October booking usually means finding an October seat, which may not exist.

For that reason the sequence we recommend is to hold seats early, keep the dates, and shape the land arrangements around them. It is the opposite of how a flexible city break is planned, and it is the right way round for this route.

Do children and infants need separate bookings?

Yes, and they need their own visa at the full USD 40, since there is no child rate on the visa.

Child air fares are quoted with your booking rather than published. The Sustainable Development Fee is where the family saving actually appears: children aged 6 to 12 pay half, and children who have not turned 6 pay nothing at all, as our guide to the SDF sets out. Tell us the children's ages at the time of travel, not today, since a birthday between booking and departure changes the arithmetic.

Ready to hold seats?

Send your dates and party size through Book & Hold. We will hold seats and return one written quote covering flights, SDF and visa, with the festival dates for your window confirmed.

Fares are quoted in Thai baht, per person, inclusive of taxes and surcharges at the time of publishing, and start from the figure shown. Fares, seats and availability are confirmed in writing by OMG Experience, the appointed General Sales Agent for Bhutan Airlines in Thailand, before ticketing. Nothing is payable online before you receive and approve the final quote.
