What happens on 11 November?
Black-necked cranes (Grus nigricollis) spend the winter on the Phobjikha wetland after flying south from the Tibetan plateau. The festival marks their return: masked dances, local songs, and a morning programme in the courtyard of Gangtey Goenpa, the 17th-century monastery that looks over the valley. You come for the birds and the village day, not for a city tshechu.

How do you get there from Paro?
Phobjikha sits west of the Black Mountains, roughly a half-day drive from Punakha after you cross Dochula from Thimphu. A practical circuit is Paro (land) → Thimphu → Punakha → Gangtey, then back.
