Staying Connected: SIM and eSIM in Bhutan

Buy the Bhutan SIM after you clear Paro immigration, not before you apply for the visa. The visa is already approved online. Reddit threads on r/BhutanTravels ask whether eSIM is at the airport; the honest answer is sometimes a kiosk, more often a Thimphu store.

The two networks

TashiCell and B-Mobile (Bhutan Telecom) cover Paro, Thimphu and Punakha well enough for maps and messaging. Mountain passes drop to 3G or nothing — download offline maps. Recent reports quote a TashiCell data eSIM around Nu. 600 for 5 GB, no voice. Physical tourist SIMs are still the airport default when a booth is open.

What the GSA does not sell

Our written fare is flights, then visa and SDF. A SIM is not in the quote. That is the GSA fact: we will not bury a tourist pack inside a ticket. Pay in ngultrum at the counter; keep the receipt.

Passport + the hotel / guide name is usually enough. Your guide can walk you to the Thimphu shop on night 2 of a 5D4N circuit.

Practical bits

  • Unlock the phone in Bangkok.
  • LINE and Google Maps work; some news sites are slower.
  • WhatsApp is fine; do not expect Thai-bank SMS to arrive every time — download the bank app token before you fly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an eSIM at Paro airport?

Do not plan on it. Travellers on r/BhutanTravels report eSIM at the TashiCell store in Thimphu more reliably than at the arrivals hall.

TashiCell or B-Mobile?

Both work in the west-Bhutan towns. TashiCell is the name most recent trip reports mention for a tourist data pack.

Will my Thai eSIM roam?

Sometimes, expensively. A local pack is cheaper for maps and LINE. Download offline maps before you leave Bangkok anyway.

Do I need a passport copy?

Yes. The shop will register the SIM against your passport, which you already used for the visa.
