Prayer flags at the Mahabodhi Temple complex

Bodh Gaya is the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment, and the Mahabodhi Temple is its spiritual heart. For Buddhists it is the holiest of the four great pilgrimage sites; for every visitor it is one of the most moving places in India. Bhutan Airlines flies to nearby Gaya (GAY) in season, putting the temple within easy reach.

Visiting the temple

Dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering the inner complex. Early morning is the calmest and coolest time to visit, to walk the circumambulation path and sit beneath the descendant of the original Bodhi tree. Photography is restricted in places, so follow the posted signs and the lead of the monks.

Beyond the Bodhi tree

The Great Buddha statue and the ring of international monasteries are within walking distance and reward an unhurried afternoon.
